Under Costco CEO Ron Vachris, hourly workers can earn around $29 with benefits and retirement contributions. At Sam’s Club, led by Chris Nicholas, starting pay has been reported at around $16 an hour. These differences reflect two approaches to managing one of retail’s biggest operating costs: labor. The reported figures reveal another contrast. Costco’s employee turnover is around 6%, compared with approximately 44% at Sam’s Club. Costco also reportedly generates about $850,000 in annual revenue per employee, while Sam’s Club generates around $380,000. Higher wages alone do not explain every difference, but workforce stability can influence productivity and customer experience. The bigger business lesson is that employees are not simply expenses on a balance sheet. Compensation, benefits, and working conditions can affect retention, experience, and performance.
