@startribune: A reader asks: When trick-or-treaters come to the door on Halloween, I’m inclined to give more candy to kids who have the cutest costumes. And I question whether I need to give candy to people who don’t bother to wear a costume or look old enough to get a job and buy their own candy. My partner says everyone who comes to the door should get the same treat. Who’s right?
I let every kid grab as much candy as they’d like out of a big bowl. When they’re shy and only take one, I tell them to grab one more “just in case.” If they don’t have a costume, I assume the family couldn’t afford one, or didn’t have time or energy to create one. For those kids, I scoop handfuls into their bag. Halloween candy sets me back $300 every year, but I love the opportunity to be generous.
