Kansas is one of the more interesting gubernatorial races this year, especially considering that Democratic Governor Laura Kelly managed to win two terms in a traditionally Republican state. She narrowly won in both 2018 and 2022, despite the very different national political environments in those elections. Kelly was a particularly strong and moderate candidate who was able to appeal to voters across party lines, and I think the political circumstances in both elections worked in her favor. However, Kelly is now term-limited, and I think Republicans have a pretty strong opportunity to flip this seat. Kansas Republicans have historically struggled with some unpopular candidates, including former Governor Sam Brownback, whose administration contributed to the political environment that helped Kelly win in 2018. Republican nominee Ty Masterson has some connections to that wing of the party, and Democrat Cindy Holscher has been trying to associate him with those unpopular Republican policies. Kansas voters have shown that they're willing to elect Democrats for governor, but I think it'll be difficult for Holscher to recreate the coalition that Kelly built. I don't think Holscher is necessarily a bad candidate, either. She's running on some pretty specific issues, including lowering property taxes, concerns about data centers, and legalizing marijuana. I think she'll perform well in Johnson County and the more Democratic-leaning population centers, especially as Kansas continues to gradually shift left politically. However, I think she has struggled with fundraising and name recognition compared to Masterson, who has been able to run significantly more advertising. Holscher also defeated Ethan Corson in the Democratic primary, and I think Corson potentially could've made this race a little closer, especially with his more moderate image. Ultimately, I think Masterson is a relatively generic Republican candidate, but that might be enough in a state that still leans pretty heavily Republican. He has Trump's endorsement, and while Trump has become less popular nationally, his support in Kansas has remained relatively stronger than in many other states. Polling has also suggested a slight Masterson advantage, and I think the combination of Kelly's absence, Republican fundraising advantages, and Kansas's partisan lean will be difficult for Democrats to overcome. I currently have Ty Masterson winning by 5.8 percentage points, flipping the governor's office back to Republicans. #kansas #cindyholscher #trump #midtermelections #politics
