@imissyoumemorial: Day of the Dead is not a Mexican Halloween. It is All Souls' Day, with five hundred years of Mexico added on top. November 1 and 2 in Mexico are the Catholic feasts of All Saints and All Souls. The ofrenda, the marigold paths, the sugar skulls and the pan de muerto grew up around those two dates. A Spanish friar, Diego Durán, recorded Indigenous families already making offerings for dead children on the first day and for adults on the second, in 1579. And half of Latin America has its own version. In Brazil November 2 is Finados, a national holiday, and the big city cemeteries fill from dawn. In Ecuador it is colada morada, a thick purple spiced drink, and guaguas de pan, bread shaped like swaddled babies. In Bolivia and Peru the souls are said to arrive at noon on November 1 and leave at noon on November 2, so the table is set for exactly 24 hours. In the Philippines it is Undas, and the plate of food left out for the dead is called atang. One church holiday, a hundred kitchens. I Miss You Memorial is a kitchen that is always open: a page for the person you miss, with their photos, videos and stories, from everyone who loved them, in one place. Free to start.
