To everyone else, Varkas seems like a good person because he keeps saving Thalia. But what people fail to understand is that his kindness can also be the very thing that prolongs her suffering. What good is being saved if you are always the last person someone chooses to save? Honestly, if Varkas cannot put Thalia first, I would rather he stop saving her altogether. Not because I want her to suffer, but because I want her to stop holding on to someone who will never choose her first. Perhaps if he stopped giving her hope, she could finally accept that there is nothing left for her to hold on to and find a way to free herself from this endless suffering. Because sometimes, being saved by someone who will never choose you can hurt far more than being abandoned by them completely. The cruelest kind of kindness is the kind that gives you just enough hope to keep holding on, while constantly reminding you that you will never be the one they choose first.
