Joaquin Phoenix plays Arthur as an isolated man whose increasingly difficult experiences begin pushing him toward the identity audiences already know as the Joker. The Joker makeup was developed through weeks of experimentation between Phoenix, director Todd Phillips and makeup artist Nicki Ledermann. Ledermann started from Arthur’s simpler working-clown design and gradually created a messier, more distressed version, even using different makeup products depending on whether it needed to smear or remain intact during filming.
