Africa doesn't just have a housing problem. We have a housing affordability problem. Millions of people need decent homes, but the cost of construction keeps putting homeownership further out of reach. And one of the biggest opportunities we have is hiding in something incredibly simple: Bricks. Bricks can be produced using locally available materials such as laterite, clay, sand and other suitable aggregates, depending on the type of brick and production method. And when they're produced locally and at scale, they can potentially reduce the dependence on expensive imported construction materials and create a more affordable path to building. Think about what that means. A young entrepreneur can set up a brick production business. That business creates jobs. It supplies affordable building materials to local contractors. Contractors build more houses. More houses create more opportunities for artisans, engineers, transporters and suppliers. And suddenly, a simple brick isn't just a building material. It's part of an economic system. This is why I believe brick manufacturing deserves far more attention in Africa. We don't solve a housing crisis only by building houses. We solve it by making the things required to build those houses more accessible, affordable and scalable. And that's where manufacturing comes in. Imagine thousands of small and medium-sized brick manufacturers across Africa, producing quality building materials for their local communities. Less dependence on imports. More local production. More jobs. More businesses. More affordable construction. And potentially, more homes for more Africans. The housing crisis is enormous. But sometimes, solving enormous problems starts with something as simple as figuring out how to produce a better brick—at the right price, in the right place, at the right scale. We don't just need more houses in Africa. We need more Africans capable of building them. And that's one of the reasons we're building machines at Aye Systems. Because the future of Africa won't only be designed. It will be manufactured.
