I think back to the teacher who was asked “why is that student just sleeping? That’s not good.” And he replies “the goal for him is to not throw chairs through windows. He’s doing great today!”

I was a teacher for 37 years, and many of them were in schools where the students came from tough neighborhoods. Students improve academically and behaviorally when they have fair and consistent consequences. This includes punishment as well as rewards. So, I agree with you.
