No, you're actually wrong. They can actually go back and sue them. Because that's them messing with their livelihood. there has been multiple cases where this has been done. they have won the cases.

Recruiter here, this happens all the time. I work in a business where a lot of people know each other and this happens, even if discouraged by HR, and after a manager hears a bad reference even unofficial, they will back pedal on the hiring.

This happened to me except they ended up connecting with my actual boss who couldn’t afford to lose me. She made sure they never contacted me again then told me about it. I left a few months later for a better job.

Want to hear something crazy? Had a guy on probation who was killing it. He updated his LinkedIn profile and I found out from his previous manager that he was the disloyal sort that would leave once a higher offer comes. Didn’t pass him on his probation

This is why, you should never, I mean never ever tell anyone that you got the Job until you got your first paycheck. Even an ironclad offers gets rescinded

This happened at my last job, however I was the back channel. They were hiring for a position unrelated to mine but my manager came to me and asked if I knew someone. I said yes, we used to work at Company X (I worked with them for 4 years & I had left that company 3 years prior to being asked this). I was asked a bunch of questions very casually. Then our VP came and asked me straight up, we're thinking of hiring this person & asked me if I were the hiring manager if I would hire them & why or why not. I gave an honest answer & they didn't get hired. This person was a nice person but as a coworker they were very unreliable & their work was inconsistent but they had glowing references because I think they were trying to get rid of this person at Company X. I felt bad but if I had given a good reference & they turned out to be terrible, that's on my reputation.

I got hired to take a guy’s job and he got demoted. He wasn’t told he was demoted though so it just created a terrible dynamic between him and me. It has cost me multiple jobs.

Yeah I’m fucked. My last manager said my attitude was due to my mental issues and I walked out of work a week later because of how she was treating me.

if a company says they would refer you and at any point in Canada it came back it is what they said that hurt your opportunity, that is a sue able offence.

So they spend time with a candidate - 3 rounds - but they take feedback from someone whose own qualifications they havent evaluated. Just because someone is a manager doesnt mean they are worthy on an opinion

that is stupid because who tell the recruter that their guy hasn't a grudge/vengence toward the person applying?

This is why you get your friends to play manager. My boy has been the CEO of so many places. The lead manager. The hiring manager and a teacher. lol haha. The only time I want my friends to lie is for helping me get a job.

This happened to me. A referral to the position from the acting CMO, 8 successful interview rounds, a project & presentation. I was told I was the first pick after all that. The CEO found a mutual who happened to dislike me for unrelated reasons, reached out to her, and suddenly the other person was chosen

Yeah, it's called a blind reference. Happens all the time especially in close nit industries. If I know someone who's worked with you I'm trusting them over a few half hour interviews.

I was the back channel. The company was ready to hire the person with an incredible resume and background. they reached out to me, i said are you crazy? I said he worked for me and walked out on a Friday at 4pm with a major project due on Monday. Absolutely do not hire this person unless you want disappointment
