Some movies become even more interesting as the years go by, and V for Vendetta (2005) is definitely one of them. Directed by James McTeigue and written by the Wachowskis, the film is based on the comic created by Alan Moore and David Lloyd. It takes place in a future Britain controlled by an oppressive government, where a mysterious masked man known as V, played by Hugo Weaving, decides to fight back against those in power. The original comic first appeared in 1982 and was influenced by the political atmosphere in Britain at the time. Alan Moore wanted to explore what might happen if a fascist government took control, and how far someone might go to fight for freedom. Then there’s the famous Guy Fawkes mask, designed for the comic by David Lloyd and inspired by the historical figure involved in the failed Gunpowder Plot of 1605. After the film’s release, the mask became recognizable far beyond the movie, appearing at protests around the world and becoming closely associated with the hacker collective Anonymous. Interestingly, the movie and comic approach V quite differently. The comic presents him as a more morally complicated character, while the film makes him easier to sympathize with. Alan Moore wasn’t happy with many of these changes and distanced himself from the adaptation. And Hugo Weaving deserves a lot of credit. Despite spending almost the entire film behind that expressionless mask, he manages to give V so much personality through his voice and movements alone. It’s fascinating how a character created for a comic in the 1980s ended up becoming such a recognizable symbol decades later. Have you read the original comic, or only watched the movie?
