In my time working with authors, there have been a few repeat interactions that raise red flags for me as an editor. OF COURSE, I always give authors the benefit of the doubt, but here’s why these interactions initially raise concern for me: 1. They compare their writing to one of the greats—Listen, we all have a great writer who influences us, but an author comparing their writing to one of the greats immediately makes an editor’s alarm bells go off. Will they be unable to handle critique? Are they maybe too attached to a past era of literature that may not sell as well today, especially for a debut author? Will they be open to fresh ideas? Instead of comping those writers we consider “the greats,” try to generally use comp titles and authors from more modern books—and focus on why the BOOKS are similar . . . Not why you’re the next Hemingway. 2. They say that “a book like this has never been written.” This might be true in a very slim percentage of cases, but it immediately makes me worry that an author hasn’t researched the niche enough. Focus on what your book ADDS to a certain genre/niche/discourse community, rather than claiming it’s completely and entirely original. Originality is overrated … and often a lie. 3. They don’t enjoy reading in their genre and/or haven’t ready widely in their genre—Again, this makes an editor wonder: Do they think they’re above this genre? Will they be unwilling to follow—or are they unknowledgeable of—certain conventions that might help their book sell? (this doesn’t mean EVERY convention, of course) Will they lack meaningful connections in the community that could be beneficial to their success? Being strongly a part of a genre community through reading shows a certain level of knowledge of said community—knowledge that can help you differentiate yourself in that space. 4. They emphasize that “every word was written with intention.” This can be completely true—and it can ALSO be true that we need to edit those words down with intention. This can be hard, but good writers have to come to terms with the fact that our individual words can’t be precious. A book is so much more than the individual words that go into it. Thoughts on any of these?📖 #writertok #bookeditor #writingtips #bookpublishing #publishingtips
