And a baby diagnosed with sickle cell disease. 💔 This is why I want every Nigerian preparing for marriage to pay closer attention to haemoglobin genotype testing. Please, don’t just ask for a genotype test. Ask what method the laboratory uses, whether the result is reliable, and whether further testing is needed if the results don’t add up. HPLC (High-Performance Liquid Chromatography) and capillary electrophoresis are important methods for analysing haemoglobin. When results are unclear or inconsistent, molecular testing may be necessary to establish the exact genetic variants. One important clarification: if one biological parent truly has HbAS and the other truly has HbAA, their child would not be expected to have HbSS or HbSC disease from that pairing. A discrepancy like this needs proper investigation, not assumptions or blame.
