The familiar corner drugstore is one of the biggest companies based in the Syracuse area — and the No. 3 standalone drugstore in the United States. For its 4,775 dedicated employees, Kinney’s success is paying off. The 123-year-old company is employee owned. All of Kinney’s clerks, pharmacists, purchasers, warehouse workers and call center employees earn a piece of the company after 1,000 hours. They don’t have to buy stock or make retirement contributions. Instead, they add company stock annually to their retirement accounts. The better KPH Healthcare Services Inc. does, the better the workers do. “Once people become owners, I think that’s where the difference is,” KPH CEO Dave Warner said. “We don’t have Wall Street investors.
