@whennoonelistened: Police officers are often among the first people someone turns to when they’re experiencing domestic violence. But training and real-life experiences don’t always tell the same story. What do you think officers most need to understand about domestic violence that might not be covered in training? I’d especially love to hear from survivors, advocates, law enforcement professionals, and anyone who has supported someone through abuse. I’ll start in the comments. ⬇️ #WhenNoOneListened #DomesticViolenceAwareness #PoliceTraining #SurvivorVoices #letstalkaboutit
don't make the victim feel like it's there fault protect them protect them from the abuser at all cost

Don't stand over a victim of abuse to ask your questions. get down to their level or lower. speak softly.

The victim will probably blame themself especially if they were the scapegoat most of their life

I wish people knew that the questions they ask hurt them just as much as the victims. They don’t want to dismiss what they hear, they don’t want a stone unturned or something missed. People don’t always explain things in a way that gets the true information out. What people explain when they are in a state of fear & terror are different than when they are in a calmer state.

To separate EVERYBODY. Do NOT START QUESTIONING if front of each other. DV is about intimidation and control. They cannot speak truth in fear

Just because there’s not bruises doesn’t mean there isn’t abuse. Abuse can be taking the car and threatening to crash it into a tree at 110mpg, it can be hitting the wall close to them, can be cornering them against a wall and screaming in their face, pinning them to the floor by their neck

just because they refuse ur help doesn't mean they don't need or want it. some of us are too scared to ask for it.

I’ll start…
I think officers need to understand that someone experiencing abuse may not tell their story perfectly, in order, or even consistently.
Fear, trauma, and years of manipulation can make it difficult to explain what’s happening. And sometimes the person asking for help is still protecting the person hurting them.
That doesn’t mean the danger isn’t real.
What would you add?
