@nursinghomeneglect: Cleanliness has always been an essential part of healthcare. Yet we have to ask an uncomfortable question: Why has bathing and personal grooming become secondary or inconsistent in some hospitals, nursing homes, rehabilitation centers, hospice settings and home healthcare? Bathing is not simply about looking presentable. Regular bathing, clean hair, oral care, clean clothing and basic grooming are fundamental components of personal hygiene. Proper hygiene helps remove sweat, dirt, bacteria and other contaminants from the body and can play an important role in infection prevention and overall well-being. When a person enters a healthcare environment, they should not have to surrender their right to feel clean, comfortable and human. This is especially important for older adults, people with disabilities, individuals recovering from illness, and those who cannot bathe or groom themselves independently. Personal grooming should be viewed as part of patient care—not a luxury or an optional service. Healthcare professionals work tirelessly to treat illness, administer medications and monitor medical conditions. But caring for the whole person also means recognizing the importance of cleanliness, dignity and personal appearance. So perhaps the question we should be asking is not “Do we have time to bathe and groom this patient?” but rather: “How did we allow basic cleanliness and personal grooming to become something that can be overlooked in healthcare?” A clean, well-groomed person is more than a matter of appearance. It is about health, dignity, comfort, confidence and quality of life. Dignity is a human right. Cleanliness is part of care. #nurse #hospital #cna #healthcare #nursinghome

Not just LTC. When I was in the hospital, I had to get my own linens from the hallway and wash myself in the bathroom with a heart rate over 150. When my mom was in SNF and even in hospice, I bathed her every night. Washed her hands , cleaned her dentures, combed her hair. Too sad to see her decline and didn’t want her to loose her dignity too

CNA’s used to do that, but now they rely on visitors and family to do it. You have to be loud and go to the front desk and request it.

at the end of the day, it's staffing. and short staffing that turns into burnout, so even when there are enough staff (rarely ever) those who have been working consistently don't have the energy to do it. poor staffing leads to burnout, burnout leads to complacency.

My honest opinion? Staffing. Larger staff to patient ratios and pushing all of the blame on staff for not getting it done and taking no accountability for making it so that it is impossible to take care of patients the way they deserve and pushing staff to their breaking point mentally and physically and emotionally to save some bucks. Instead of supporting staff they will threaten with write ups and other action when tasks do not get completed yet the amount of tasks to complete is infeasible so for staff members you are in a lose lose position because you are the faces people remember and blame for their care also they do not understand that the root of the problem is not that staff is lazy but they are fighting a losing battle every day they show up

it's sad, really. i wish i could spend an hour on every single resident and get them looking as perfect as possible every day. in my case, the facility has a census with ridiculous limitations, and we're so "short" because of it. time is usually spent handling blowouts, bed changes, etc. it's horrible :( i wish we could have more staff, others deserve better.
