September 11, 2001. 🇺🇸 2,977 lives lost. Thousands of families forever changed. And a day that will never be forgotten. Visiting the 9/11 Memorial & Museum in New York City is an experience that is difficult to put into words. Standing where the Twin Towers once stood and seeing the names of those who lost their lives makes the magnitude of that day feel very different than seeing it through a television screen. There are also so many meaningful details throughout the Memorial and Museum that are easy to miss: 🌹 The white roses — If you see a white rose placed in a name on the Memorial, it marks what would have been that person’s birthday. 💧 The reflecting pools — The two enormous pools sit within the footprints of the original Twin Towers. 🖤 The placement of the names — The names aren’t simply listed alphabetically. Many were arranged through “meaningful adjacencies,” placing family members, friends, coworkers and others with personal connections near one another. 🌳 The Survivor Tree — A Callery pear tree was discovered badly damaged in the rubble after the attacks. It was rehabilitated and eventually returned to the site, where it now stands as a symbol of survival and resilience. 🏛️ The museum itself — Much of the museum is underground, where you can see remnants of the original World Trade Center site and artifacts that help tell the stories of those who were there. 🕊️ The Last Column — The final steel column removed from Ground Zero is preserved inside the museum, covered with messages, photographs and tributes left by recovery workers and others. If you visit, give yourself plenty of time. Read the names. Listen to the stories. Put the camera away for a little while and simply take it all in. Today, we remember those who lost their lives, the families who lost loved ones, the first responders who ran toward danger, and everyone whose life was forever changed that morning. May we never forget. 🇺🇸 9.11.01
