Having read Dune Messiah, the horror is Paul’s reaction to the number of people the Fremen killed for not accepting him as Emperor. In the book, he compares himself to a certain “failed painter”, the point being things have gotten so bad that the Fremen’s jihad makes what the “failed painter” did look like just another Tuesday to Paul and he’s so scared of his own followers that he’s carefully trying to navigate figuring out how to finally end the chaos he caused but is too scared to do it. All Paul wants in the book is for him and Chani to escape to the Fremen Sietch but he has to figure out how to stop the Fremen first without upsetting them. Now the movie definitely changes a lot based on the trailers with Chani being directly opposed to Paul instead of fully trusting him and Irulan’s a lot more hesitant to betray him (in the books, she betrays him early on but later has a change of heart and helps Alia identify the traitors). It’s gonna be interesting to see as well how Leto II and Ghanima play a role in the story since they’re born at the end of the book this movie is adapting but seem to be teenagers in this version.
