@inventionontt: Original Video Credit: IG/unicorn.8777778 An ordinary-looking antique book reveals an unexpected surprise when its pages are gently fanned apart. A detailed illustration of a historic town appears along the exposed edges, complete with buildings, streets, and tiny figures. When the pages return to their normal position, the artwork disappears, leaving the book looking almost completely unchanged. The secret lies in a bookbinding technique known as fore-edge painting. Instead of painting directly onto the flat edge of a closed book, an artist fans the pages slightly and applies a carefully aligned watercolor image across their exposed surfaces. Once the paint dries, the pages are released, concealing the illustration. Gold leaf can then be applied to the closed edges, making the hidden artwork even harder to detect. Fore-edge painting has a history stretching back several centuries, with disappearing watercolor designs becoming particularly associated with English bookbinding during the 17th and 18th centuries. The technique is often linked to the English bookbinder Samuel Mearne, although its precise development remains debated. Today, surviving examples are prized by collectors for their craftsmanship, combining traditional bookbinding with miniature artwork that remains invisible until the pages are moved. #shorts #Science #education #learn #invention
