Can we talk about the ick I got when Azriel was trying to open up about his past, and Elain was more interested in finding a bed? That scene left such a bad taste in my mouth and only furthered my dislike of her. He was trying to share something deeply personal, and it felt like she had absolutely no interest in hearing it. I also keep coming back to what Mor said “I’m sure some other equally unavailable female will come along to tempt you.” Then we get “Mor backed away a step, not in fear of him, but of those words. What remained unsaid.” THAT. Right there. I think it says so much about Azriel’s pattern of pursuing unavailable women. Maybe, deep down, he gravitates toward women he knows he can’t truly have because it’s safer that way. If he doesn’t believe he deserves real love, then pursuing someone who is ultimately unattainable allows him to avoid confronting that fear.

Their story is not of love. It’s two people at rock bottom trying to find peace. Elain wants to be accepted and seen as an adult (good luck, you no-personality cardboard box!!!) and Azriel has been searching for what he thinks is love for so long, he clings at the idea of it. Especially with someone who “needs” him. They are NOT end game.

Azriel thinks to himself early in the book that he doesn’t understand the type of all consuming love Feysand has. That he wanted it at one point but doesn’t think k he wants it anymore. He admits he’s never felt that. This is while he’s having this thing with Elain. How much clearer can this be?

Every interaction Elain and Azriel had this book made me sick. I don't even care one way or another, but those two are not end game. It was over when Az tried to open up about his history and Elain was like "yeah, yeah, okay whatever, lets find a bedroom." And the disgusting way he thinks about and feels owed Elain...absolutely vile. That is not forbidden love, that is two people at their worst just trying to feel something, and using the other to do it.

I stand by the fact that Elaine was using Az the night Lucien caught them. Elaine is a seer, they can sense and smell each other through their mating bond. She answers his request to enter her rooms. It just felt like she wanted him to find them together to force him to stop perusing her. She knew she’d be safe with the IC there and that they’d never let anyone hurt each other seriously. Shes beyond irritating to me this book and she needs some growth.
