I think one of the reasons dating is such a shit show these days is because we are expected to form deep, meaningful connections with total strangers. They are, more often than not, raised in communities with completely different values and expectations for what a relationship looks like. We are the first generation to be exposed to this number of potential partners and, not surprisingly, have this kind of exposure to trauma in dating and relationships. The seemingly endless options for partnership is making men think that their actions don’t have any consequences and they can discard as many women as they like until they decide to keep one. For the most part, they’re right! There is no consequence for discarding women. Until very recently where women have decided to stop dating men, it’s been lots of heartache and headache. I think without community holding people accountable for their patterns in relationships, we don’t have a chance at bringing decency back to dating.
