On July 29, 2026, 29-year-old David Simpson was released from the Mecklenburg County Jail in Charlotte after posting a $10,000 bond on an unrelated weapon charge. Simpson walked out around 12:21 a.m. Just 84 minutes later, at approximately 1:45 a.m., police say he shot two men at the Country Club Apartments following an ongoing dispute over a parking space. One man was killed and the other was seriously injured. According to investigators, surveillance footage allegedly shows Simpson retrieving a black bag believed to contain a rifle before approaching the two men. Police recovered 7.62-caliber shell casings from the scene. Simpson had previously pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter for a separate 2013 fatal shooting and served several years in prison before being released in 2020. He had also faced additional charges in the years since. Simpson was arrested again and is now being held without bond while facing charges including first degree murder and possession of a firearm by a felon. His girlfriend, Shakema Scott, was also charged with accessory after the fact for allegedly helping him after the shooting.
