Many many years ago (most likely not a good method) when I was taught, it was if you replaced the word with a full stop and it made two sentences that both made sense then that was the conjunction

I couldn’t even remember what conjunction was, but I had a feeling it was probably ‘while’, as I assumed you were asking what word conjoined the two separate subjects (or whatever the proper terminology is for this particular sentence, lol). Somehow, I worked it out with logic. Lol. I also considered the word ‘after’ too, but went with while. :)

I think it’s ridiculous that children have to learn all of these words like conjunction, clauses etc, it kills free writing when they are asking you to add so many things to a sentence

i never learned conjunctions in English, instead I learned them in German which is why I was able to tell it was "while" due to it connecting the Main sentence to the subordinate clause

I do think the terminology is ridiculous and confusing. I know all of this, but as soon as you label it as a conjunction ext I am thrown off. It’s strange!!
