@arnoldgreed: A gear selector is the driver's interface with the transmission. It might be a traditional lever, a dial, a row of buttons or a compact joystick. The same-looking control can operate different hardware. 🚗 Manual gear lever In a conventional manual car, the driver selects a gear and operates the clutch. Linkages or cables can connect the lever to the gearbox. The shift pattern and reverse selection procedure depend on the vehicle. 🅿️ Automatic gear lever A familiar automatic lever often provides P, R, N and D, sometimes with a manual selection mode. The selector may use a mechanical connection or electronic signals. Its appearance alone does not reveal how many gears the transmission has. 🔄 CVT and DCT selectors A CVT and a dual-clutch transmission can both use a conventional-looking lever. CVT and DCT describe transmission designs; they do not require a unique selector shape. Two nearly identical cabin controls can therefore operate different systems. 💻 Electronic lever / shift-by-wire An electronic selector sends a request to the vehicle's control system. It does not need the same physical connection as a traditional cable-operated lever. Some controls return to a central position, so always confirm the selected mode on the display. 🛞 Column-mounted lever Moving the selector to the steering column can free space in the center console. Column mounting describes its location, not whether the transmission is a particular automatic design. 🎛️ Rotary dial A dial changes the selection through rotation. The vehicle's display and indicator show the chosen mode. Do not assume the dial's current physical position tells the entire story after an automatic system intervention. 🔘 Push buttons Separate buttons offer another way to request transmission modes. Button placement, interlocks and confirmation cues vary, so learn the layout before driving an unfamiliar car. 🕹️ Joystick-style control A compact control can use short movements and spring back after a request. It may have a separate Park button. Check the indicator rather than guessing from the lever position. These nine categories overlap: some describe the gearbox, others describe the control method, shape or location. The labeled parts are a simplified illustration, not a universal repair diagram.
