@minutemurse: Why can sepsis cause vasodilation? Let's break down why these patients vasodilate! Lots of people were curious from the last video. Check out my Profile for all my Study Guides! Sepsis → inflammatory chemicals → increased nitric oxide → vasodilation → decreased vascular resistance → hypotension.

Follow the septic six bundle: Give oxygen, antibiotics within first hour, insert and indwelling catheter, take bloods, obtain lactate, give vasopressor if needed and give fluids. Give 3, take 3.

Very helpful Thankyou. Currently doing a module on the pathophysiology of sepsis and this is immensely useful! 😊

Recognize early — assess for fever/hypothermia, tachycardia, hypotension, confusion and rapid breathing. ABC assessment — secure the airway, assess breathing and circulation. Give oxygen if indicated; monitor SpO₂. Establish IV access and collect blood samples, including blood cultures and lactate. Administer IV broad-spectrum antibiotics promptly, ideally within 1 hour when sepsis or septic shock is recognized. Give IV crystalloids for hypotension or poor perfusion, with frequent reassessment. Monitor vital signs, urine output, consciousness and fluid balance. Identify and control the source of infection. Escalate urgently if the patient deteriorates; vasopressors may be needed for persistent hypotension.
