@tinatalkingtherapy: A common situation where a boundary is needed with the parents of my teen clients! Covering this before hand in the Parent Communication Policy doesn’t eliminate these conversations, but it does decrease them and gives me something to point to when I explain why I am not willing to do that #teentherapist #therapysessions #privatepractice #therapist #mentalhealththerapist

I don’t think they should be talking to you anyway. You are their kid’s therapist, not theirs. If they really need to talk to someone, they can get their own therapist. What’s talked about, is between you and your client. Personally, I’d be very hurt, if my dad and therapist were talking about me, behind my back. But that’s just me.

i had a therapist in middle school who was very clearly in constant communication with my mom (i actually walked in on a zoom call once where the therapist was telling her everything i talked about and my mom was going "no, i didn't do that" "no, she started that fight") which was especially harmful because the main issue i was dealing with at the time was my strained relationship with my mother. it very much felt like her role was to get me to 'behave' as opposed to benefitting my mental state in anyway and it did much more harm than good. even if the parents have good intentions, a teens therapist needs to be THEIR therapist or it won't be any help.

When would be appropriate time for a parent to tell you something that would benefit you to know to work with the parent to bring the topic up to the client

And even if they weren't "smart enough" to know it's still morally corrupt

I had to time my calls to parents with a built in hard limit because 1; they were not my clients. And 2; they were my least favorite part of the job next to admin in the school where I was placed lol

Yep! I tell my minor clients’ parents that I’m their child’s therapist, they can communicate with me all they want, but if they have a concern I will be telling my client where the concern is coming from. For big life changes, that’s an at home conversation. You can inform me when you’ll have that conversation as a family so I can see if the client wants to talk about it or process that, but I don’t break any life altering news to a minor client. I’m not the parent

My first therapy session was myself, my dad and my step-mother. It was all then telling the therapist how bad I was (I wasn’t) and him reprimanding me. So thankful for my current therapist. She’s beyond amazing.

Yeah once our rapport is good enough I just straight up tell them like "heyyy so Mom told me about such and such what's going on with that"

Trust is so important and our school counselors need that same respect to help our kids

I was hospitalized for an eating disorder when I was 17. I saw my therapist at that hospital into college. My parents called my therapist to try to get information from my sessions. I moved 300 miles away, at 25. At 35 I hit a wall & the estrangement began. I’m 41 now, and no longer in relationship with either of them. This behavior never ever gets better.

just the fact that my therapist told me she called her(aka my mom) even when it was to ask if I felt sessions were still being successful it made me not trust the therapist

I had to set this boundary myself after years of it not happening or maybe my therapist being less obvious about it. It was the only time I had ever snapped and was in my opinion rude to my therapist. I was 18 and the issue was caused by my mom.
