SAME COSTUME. OR A DIFFERENT STORY? 👣 Has the Patterson-Gimlin film finally been exposed as a hoax? Or are we rushing to close one of the greatest mysteries of our time? The new documentary Capturing Bigfoot has sparked headlines, controversy, and some very strong emotions. As a scientist who has spent years investigating this mystery, I have some serious questions. Tonight, I’ll be sitting down with filmmaker Marq Evans and Clint Patterson, son of Roger Patterson, for what I hope will be a fascinating, candid, and thought-provoking conversation on Explorer Society. I’ll be asking some tough but fair questions. Not to defend anyone’s beliefs or challenge anyone’s intentions, but to get closer to the truth. Ahead of our conversation, I wanted to share something I wrote about the new evidence, the unanswered questions, and why I believe the science matters more than the headlines. I’d love for you to read it and share your thoughts. And I hope you’ll join us tonight at 9 PM ET on Explorer Society! The Patterson-Gimlin Film Has Not Been Proven a Hoax. Here’s Why That Matters By Dr. Mireya Mayor For nearly 60 years, a few seconds of grainy film have fueled one of America’s most enduring mysteries. Now we’re being told the mystery is over. A newly discovered reel of film, a documentary and a wave of headlines have seemingly delivered the verdict: The famous 1967 Patterson-Gimlin Bigfoot footage was a hoax. The New York Post declared the original footage “exposed as hoax.” Variety described the new documentary, Capturing Bigfoot, as uncovering “the truth.” Exposed. Uncovered. Case closed. Except, is it? As a primatologist and National Geographic Explorer who has spent years investigating the possibility of an undiscovered North American primate, I would welcome an answer. But I want the right answer—not the most sensational one or the one that confirms what believers or skeptics already think. Let me be clear: I’m not defending the Patterson-Gimlin film, nor am I dismissing the newly discovered footage. Either could be authentic, fabricated or misunderstood. Both deserve the same scientific scrutiny. In Capturing Bigfoot, filmmaker Marq Evans presents previously unseen footage that he believes represents a rehearsal for the famous 1967 film. The discovery is intriguing and potentially significant. But there’s an enormous difference between evidence suggesting a hoax and proof that one occurred. What does the new film actually prove? The original footage was captured in October 1967, when Roger Patterson and Bob Gimlin reported encountering a large, upright, ape-like creature near Bluff Creek in Northern California. The newly discovered reel reportedly belonged to Norm Johnson, an employee of Boeing’s film department during the 1960s. It contains footage of an ape-like figure and was reportedly shot on Kodak film stock dating to 1966. That sounds compelling. But there’s a crucial distinction: The age of film stock is not necessarily the age of the images recorded on it. Unexposed vintage film can survive for decades and, under the right conditions, still be used in a compatible camera. Footage recorded years later would retain the film’s original manufacturing markings. Identifying stock manufactured in 1966 does not establish that the images were captured then. That doesn’t mean the newly discovered footage was fabricated. It means its recording date requires independent corroboration. The filmmakers have also reportedly identified camera-related similarities connecting the two recordings. But the same camera model isn’t necessarily the same physical camera. And even establishing that the same camera was used wouldn’t prove one film was a rehearsal for the other. What matters is whether independent examination can establish the new reel’s provenance, recording date and connection to the original film. If we’re going to question the authenticity of the Patterson-Gimlin film, shouldn’t we apply precisely the same standards to the footage being used to discre
