As an actual old gay I can say that it's usually because you're 1. better looking 2. better groomed/dressed 3. more intelligent/ better spoken 4. have girls who aren't dodging being alone with you because you don't creep on them 5. talented in some way other than just sports. All of these are good things so yes, take the derision as a compliment.
