HOW CANADIAN WOMEN WENT FROM HALF THE WORKFORCE TO 85% How did Canadian women go from about half in the paid workforce to 85% in one working lifetime? That's women 25 to 54, from 52% in 1976 to 85% last year, ahead of the US at 78% and the rich country average at 76%. Some of it is recent. Until 1955, a woman in the federal public service had to quit when she got married. This one's personal. My dad died young and my mom became the breadwinner. My grandma, a teacher, shaped me too. Child care moved the numbers. Quebec brought in low fee child care in 1997. By 2019 the share of single moms of young kids there with a job had doubled, from about 38% to 76%, and researchers credit child care with a big part of it. The research on the kids is mixed, and quality seems to matter most. The pay gap is still here. By the hour, women earn about 88 cents for every dollar men earn. Over a year it's closer to 73, mostly from fewer paid hours. Claudia Goldin won the 2023 Nobel in economics for showing the gap largely opens with the first child. In Canada, mothers' earnings drop about half the year of the first birth and are still about a third lower 10 years later. That means a smaller CPP, a smaller pension and less RRSP room. 3 things I'd do 1. Earned less, or nothing, while raising a child under 7? Ask for the CPP child rearing dropout when you apply. It isn't automatic. 2. In BC, PEI and Ontario, most posted jobs now have to show a pay range. Use it when you negotiate. 3. Keep a bank account, a credit card and a TFSA in your own name, and know where all the household money is. Thanks, Mom. Free guides and a simple retirement calculator, then one email a month, at calmmoneycoach.com. I'm Brian Orlando, CPA, in Halifax. Advice-only planning through Calm Money Coach. No products, no commissions. Sources: Statistics Canada, OECD, Public Service Commission of Canada, Fortin (2019), Connolly, Fontaine and Haeck (2023), nobelprize.org, Vanier Institute, canada.ca.
