@anna..papalia: You thought deciding that updating your resume and putting yourself out there was the hard part. NOPE! Now you need to: ▪️Network- 80% of people get jobs through their network. Do not waste your time just filling out online applications. Instead ask your family and friends to refer you into their organizations. ▪️Apply to jobs- Then you need to follow up your referral with an application. ▪️Email Recruiters, HR people and Hiring Managers- Send cold emails, networking emails and ask for informational interviews. ▪️Research companies- Be proactive and look for companies where you want to work rather than just looking at job postings. ▪️Practice and prepare for your job interviews, get your story straight and know who you are, what you want and where you want to go ▪️Buy an interview suit, always wear navy to a corporate job interview ▪️Go on several rounds of interviews- You need take time off to interview and prep Negotiate- learn how to negotiate a job offer, advocate for yourself and demand your worth. ▪️Put in your notice- write a resignation letter, tell your boss you are quitting ▪️Start a new job and live happily ever after…. Follow me and I’ll teach you how #jobinterview #intervewprep #jobsearchtips #careeradvice

If my job history sucks because of cancer, should I lie on my resume? And if so, what’s the best way to go about it? I’m not getting any interviews likely because of the gaps and I’m getting desperate at this point.

It's so funny I see this tonight. Not even a skill drop box can encapsulate what I do in resume worthy wording that avoids storytelling. I'm a pediatric home health nurse and unless you have a close affiliation you don't fully comprehend what the job contains. It's one-on-one care with a child on life-sustaining equipment (yes trach/ventilator "life support") out in the wild away from the structure of the Children's Hospital. I support normal life activities while essentially having to intervene as the doctor, nurse and respiratory therapist, outside of a controlled environment, by myself and anywhere, like a school hallway and 50 kids headed to lunch around us. Intervene, divert crisis, preserve life and still get to lunch on time like a typical Tues. It's hard to encapsulate that on a resume or for a hiring manager to understand what my role is when a hospital nurse role comes with that infrastructure, specialties and extra hands. Then the population of these medically complex children is so small most can't envision these children can exist in their home or that a home health nurse does more than a Children's Hospital nurse. I actually have found I have less restrictions than a hospital nurse such as the "life support" is mainly handled by the Respiratory Therapist in the hospital. I handle everything except making the equipment.

Thank you for your advise to keep applying for jobs and to not dwell on one job. Applications and interviews were a pain, but I push through and I got an amazing position.

Right? Hitting send on the applications is where the real grind starts, and the silence afterward is brutal. If a company leaves you hanging, name it at candidatevoice.org, anonymously.

@ANASTASIA .K. GREGORY There’s a difference between hearing about an opportunity and actually understanding it. Education bridges that gap. 📊
