I want to preface with unironic friendly tone tag here, because you don’t seem malicious? Or something??? But this is the most unapologetic, incredibly, baffling statement I’ve heard in a while. I think you’ve misunderstood what communism is, and what it seeks to do. And so, it’s pretty evident you haven’t read Marx, and too, misinterpret what he means and how he’s related to it as a whole. Half the things you talked about here I could tell you Marx has talked on. You say he’s detached from modern society, yet you wouldn’t know? you haven’t seen what he had to say ? He Is not the end all be all, good job for knowing that. but he is our foundation in what we use to form our frameworks. Our basis of thought. You’re trying to apply your understanding of peoples continuation and interpretations off of Marx’s work, as the very foundation for the theory to interpreted in the first place. People don’t need to read “the 200 year old work” in math, but before they know advance calculus, they must learn algebra. To know math, you must know Newton and what he had said, which is to say, his formulas. Political science are a bit different from a mathematical one. You can talk about the contexts in, VERY namely, something like CAPTIAL, but it’s going to be incredibly hard to concisely, and most importantly, accurately condense **MULTIPLE HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF PAGES**. I mean, unless you want to just copy and paste what he has said, and then add something like fucking footnotes, there isn’t someone out there making -Capital(by David davidsmen)-

It’s dogmatic to think you need to *read* Marx in order to understand Marx. It’s the same fallacy that Marx himself described; philosophers who seek to understand the world without intending to change it. As communists our goals are not to pass an exam on Marxist theory, it is to be able to theorise ourselves and work towards achieving communism.

This is beautifully nuanced, realistic, necessary take. They think we all needed Marx to understand capitalism is evil. Baby some of us are black and indigenous ppl. We know that already

I'm not saying Marx is trash or anything but like you said he's so far removed from modern American conditions. especially for us as black people living under these conditions I definitely feel it's more important we read the works of the panthers who wrote on these topics. the lords who wrote on these topics. Angela Davis especially is a really good example of people who have actually lived through these things whose perspective isn't centered on a reality that no longer exists.

Reading applied theory can teach you more than the original writings. We need to apply knowledge, to organize people. There's nothing better about older works. You can understand State and Revolution from a 20 page summary better than you can from the book itself. We aren't an archaic literature club.

this sounds reasonable. Das Capital is a springboard, and like all other springboards you don't *have* to use it

I also don't see the value in reading theory just to spout it at people. I read theory to inform an understanding I had of the world. no point in knowing the definition of Praxis if you never engage with it

Marx is really helpful for the philosophical and sociological framework. Marxism is much more than just economics— you can get the economic theory from learned experience if you simply think about it lol

My thing is I feel like it’s not that far back to the point where it’s not applicable like other works of Engels and Marx like Marx and Engels started writing abt historical materialism and reading something like anti During it’s very like oh yeah this is obvious but with capital I don’t feel the same way I catch my self quite often reading his work and seeing how it directly still applies
