Honestly, compared to the other Nursefathers, Rien always seemed the least evil to Ryoushu specifically. I can't really think of any spesific way that he harmed Ryoushu, unlike the other Nursefathers. He is shown to truly care for her in defiance of the prescripts. The things he does like grooming Araya into the next pinky Nursefather, sending Sora to her death, and not standing up agaonst the ither Nursefathers is absolutely horrid, but I also kinda pity him, especially in consideration of when he joined the index. The cake scene in particular is one. of the scenes that makes me feel this the most about him. He truly wanted to make Ryoushu happy and get her something for her birthday, but due to the years if being in the index and being forced to pretend to be someone that he seemingly doesent even know withered away at his will over the years. Another is the waves scene, where is is mostly certainly the waves and the prescripts are the winds. The prescripts made him everything that he is, so who is he to defy those winds in order to protect the sand castles that the winds made him create in the first place? Who is he to stop listening to the very thing that makes him what he is?
Finaly the "frozen" scene as well, where he was eternally frozen as nothing more than a body for the prescripts, waiting for his daughter Yoshide to unfeeeze him, and prove that he could be more. But that never came, Ryoushu ended up rejecting him, breaking the very last of his will, yet also granting him the will to defy the prescripts himself. He unfroze himself, just unfortunately for him he didn't see a point in anything after his daughter rejected him. Although he unfroze himself, he was already far too broken for taht to matter.
Of course, none if this excuses him, just to me it makes him a character that's worth at least some sympathy and sadness. He was still a terrible person, just he had the capacity to be better, but unfortunately due to the prescripts he just didn't have the strength to be better. He was too afraid to rebel against the prescripts, and so he was nothing more than a lonely little wave.
Honestly he is one of, if not my favorite characters from limbus.
