In 1759, a Benedictine Abbot named Augustin Calmet recorded a strange story about a witch returning home from a nighttime gathering. Her method of transportation? A “devil”, wrote Calmet. According to the account, everything went wrong when the bells began ringing for morning prayers. The sound (suggesting the Christian God’s presence) frightened the devil, who slipped out from beneath the witch and fled, leaving her tumbling into a thorn hedge beside a river. After picking herself up, she spotted a young man and begged him to help her reach the next village. When he learned what had happened, she pleaded with him to keep it a secret. She even offered him gifts in exchange for his silence. Unfortunately, the story of a witch riding home on a devil was apparently too good for the village to keep quiet. Calmet’s account is a strange little piece of European witchcraft folklore, featuring nighttime gatherings, the Devil, and the belief that witches traveled to secret meetings under supernatural protection. Have we stumbled across a story that was told in different forms across Europe? The details are unusual enough to make me wonder whether similar versions exist in older folklore collections. Have you encountered a similar tale in the history of witchcraft or European folklore? Let me know in the comments!
