A few days ago, at our usual chilling spot, we watched an Al Jazeera documentary on YouTube titled “Sudan: Fight for the Heart of South,” featuring General Joseph Lagu Yanga (1931-2026). I asked a friend if he knew the man on the screen. To my surprise, he did not. Even after explaining Joseph Lagu’s historical significance, he showed little interest. Sadly, this reflects a wider problem among many young South Sudanese: a lack of interest in our own history. We passionately discuss football and the histories of other countries, yet know very little about the people and struggles that shaped our own nation. We know about the Mau Mau uprising and the Maji Maji Rebellion, but how many of us understand the significance of Anyanya I, Anyanya II, or the SPLA/M? Watching the documentary, I could not help imagining what South Sudan’s history might have looked like without Joseph Lagu’s leadership and contribution to the liberation struggle. To me, General Joseph Lagu Yanga was one of the greatest figures in South Sudan’s history, a symbol of resistance, and a man whose legacy deserves far greater recognition. We cannot afford to know the history of other nations better than our own. Our young people must know the people who shaped our past and understand the struggles that brought us this far. Rest in peace, General Joseph Lagu Yanga. I consider it a privilege to have lived in his time.
