I think what makes coralline so unique is from that creepiness a musical would’ve been cool but I don’t think the film would’ve been as popular as Coralline is

I think the fact they kept one song instead of making the whole movie a musical actually makes it more creepy. You have this lone, 30 second song that gives subtle foreshadowing to other mother’s real intentions, and it’s something you never notice on first watch, maybe because you don’t listen to the lyrics closely at all. It is still a very upbeat and fun song, but it has that underlying creepiness when you actually understand what the song is saying

I think it could work as a musical if it was Bruno coulais doing the instrumentation. Because he nailed the soundtrack already, and many people have put lyrics over the end credits theme which sounds very good.
