@stonewellequine: She was bought for $250 from a racetrack in Seoul. She left the Korean War a Staff Sergeant in the United States Marine Corps. She saved many lives & was wounded-in-action. Can you name this American hero? Meet Staff Sergeant Reckless, a small Mongolian mare who became one of the most decorated animals in American military history. In 1952, Marines of the 5th Regiment bought her to haul ammunition for their recoilless rifle platoon. She learned the trails, learned to lie down under fire, and learned to make the trip on her own. In March 1953, at the Battle for Outpost Vegas, Reckless made 51 trips up and down the hills in a single day, mostly alone, through heavy shelling. She carried roughly 9,000 pounds of ammunition and brought wounded Marines back down. She was hit twice and kept going. She earned two Purple Hearts and was promoted to Sergeant, then Staff Sergeant. She also earned a reputation for eating scrambled eggs, drinking Coca-Cola, and occasionally eating poker chips. The Marines didn’t call her a mascot. They called her one of their own. #SergeantReckless #KoreanWar #USMC #Semperfi #WarHorse
