A transgender student at Charles R. Drew High School in Clayton County, Georgia, has been blocked from running for homecoming queen, prompting a petition and public backlash from the student and her supporters. Riley Williams, a senior, said she had already paid the required dues, posed for a campaign photo and begun preparing her bid before being called into the principal’s office and told she could not appear on the queen ballot. Clayton County Public Schools said the decision followed federal Title IX guidance rather than any written district policy. A spokesperson told Atlanta News First that under the current federal interpretation, “gender-based distinctions” are “based on biological s*x.” The district has no local rule addressing transgender students on homecoming courts, according to reporting on the case. Officials instead offered Williams the option of running for homecoming king. Williams rejected that option. “Forcing me to run for something like homecoming king would invalidate my experience as a woman,” she told Atlanta News First. She also pushed back on any suggestion her participation would create an unfair advantage. “There’s no competitive advantage” tied to her identity, she said, adding, “As a matter of fact, people are less likely to vote for me.” Williams has since launched a Change .org petition calling on the district to adopt “inclusive guidelines” allowing students to compete based on gender identity rather than the s*x listed in their school records. The case echoes a 2019 dispute at Johnson High School in Gainesville, Georgia, where a transgender student, Dex Frier, said he was removed from the prom king ballot and told he could only run for prom queen. For now, Williams remains off the queen ballot at Drew High School, with the district maintaining its position is dictated by federal law rather than local choice.
