Treating acid reflux without treating the barrier is like turning off the smoke alarm and calling the fire handled. A PPI lowers the acid, so it burns less. It doesn't change why your LES, the valve between your stomach and esophagus, keeps opening when it shouldn't. Please don't stop or change yours on your own. If your reflux reaches your throat, pepsin matters too. It's an enzyme that comes up with the reflux, and a review of the research says PPIs don't help most people with throat reflux. Your valve has a backup, the diaphragm muscle that wraps around it. In a randomized trial of 19 people, 4 weeks of abdominal breathing training cut the time the esophagus spent in acid from 9.1% to 4.7%. People with large hernias weren't in the study. Here's how I teach the LES Lock to my clients, 1 to 5 minutes right after meals, up to 5 times a day: 1. Sit upright, one hand on your belly and one on your lower ribs. 2. Breathe in slowly through your nose. Let your belly rise first, then feel your ribs widen into your hands: sides, front, and back (the 360 expansion). Keep your shoulders still. 3. Breathe out slowly and let your belly and ribs soften back in. 4. Keep it easy, never forced. If your chest rises more than your belly, slow down and send the breath lower. My free Reflux Revolution Guide is in my bio. 📚 Bardhan et al., 2012, Int J Otolaryngol, narrative review: PPIs do not help the majority with extraesophageal reflux, PMID 22242022. Eherer et al., 2012, Am J Gastroenterol, randomized controlled trial, n=19 (10 breathing training, 9 control), no large hernias: time with esophageal pH under 4 fell from 9.1% to 4.7% at 4 weeks, no change in controls, PMID 22146488. #acidreflux #gerd #lpr #refluxtok #refluxdietitian
