@fallon_boerboels: If I were bringing home a new puppy today, these are the things I’d prioritize from day one. Not obedience commands or teaching a bunch of tricks, but building the foundation for a confident, adaptable, well adjusted dog. Save for your next puppy! #puppy #puppytraining #dogowner #dogbehavior #dogtrainingtips
How to do (1) when she treats every touch as an opportunity to bite? I can’t get near her nails or mouth because she’s too bitey. She’s 9 weeks old.

This is EXACTLY what I did with Lala! Being 3mo old, Dumped, put in a shelter, and then taken to my house, it really REALLY helped. She is such a confident dog, I can train Obedience Later! 10mo and she's EXCELLENT 👌🏻🩷🥳

We are doing all this now. Before she is 16 weeks old we are prioritizing all this, then training. Hands on, enrichment, easy basic training, then we will shift to some more intense and rigorous training that we want to implement.

This is a great roadmap! Our breeder did puppy culture and ENS with our girl and gave us a good foundation to build on when she came home with us. It has made ALL the difference in our vet and groomer trips!

I worked very hard with my puppy on handling, nail trimming, etc, but it really paid off when at 7 months old she injured her tail and we’ve been going to the vet for weekly bandage changes. And she lounges while they change her bandage!! The vet was flabbergasted by her solid temperament and behavior as a 7 month old lab puppy!

You get the “Best Dog Mom” award. A very detailed puppyhood book might be in your future. One with sections where people can note each interaction. Kind of like an old fashioned baby book. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻

I condition my dog to being touched and handled by just messing with his body, paws, face when he sleeps. I doubt it'll work with every dog but surprisingly it worked for him 😅 this is him at 10ish weeks. he's turning 3 soon

i did this with my cat! i was NOT about to have an adult cat scratching me up because i didn't start trimming his nails young. plus he does really good at the vet because i bother him so much at home that he's so used to being handled 😭

I tried this with our puppy Daisy and nobody else in the house would do it. So now she's 4, I have to medicate her for nail trims, she's scared of baths, and is scared of literally everything😫😫

my suggestion would be to not get a puppy 😅 kidding, but it was a TON of work! Doing all these things you mentioned consistently for Bobby’s first year of life paid off SO much but the work never stops!

The balance of neutrality and socialization is so tricky! We kind of overdid it on greetings, so I’ll be adjusting next time!

There is a great socialization list by Dr Sophia Yin (you could probably google the list). We hand this out to all new puppy owners at the vet I work at. Keep in mind, sounds are also part of socialization - think fireworks and thunderstorms. YouTube has some great soundtracks if you type in “calm pet”. We also do happy tail visits for new puppies. 5 visits where they come in and nothing bad happens (vaccines or nail trims). We do something different at each of the 5 visits and owners get a $5 credit on their account for each happy tail visit they come in for (these are free visits for the client).

I have a question, where I live there are no dogs I trust, but I want my future dog to at least tolerate other dogs, what should I do?

I did all of this and my puppy is amazing! Every single day since i got her i touch her mouth, paws, and ears. It is very important to me that she is able to be okay with that because my older dog needs to be muzzled.
