College prof here: Psychology. I don’t take attendance, but do daily work, that you have to be there to get. Contact me before and it’s an excused absence, don’t, and you missed them. P.S. I shut and lock the door when the class starts. Locked out, not getting in. (No electronic devices out during class either.) 🙂

I have to take attendance because if someone receives a failing grade, I must enter their last day of attendance in order to enter their grade.

Almost every school that accepts federal financial aid has to report attendance. It’s not a choice. If they don’t take attendance, the Dept of Education will shut off the financial aid spigot to that school and that’ll be the end of it. Attendance is taken in online classes, too.

I have to take attendance as a professor because if a student fails, I have to provide the last date of attendance when submitting grades.

I am a college professor I take attendance. I would rather not take attendance, because I need to input that into canvas Student by Student, and I have between two and 300 students a semester and doing that every week for 15 weeks is rather tedious. However, it does tend to keep the students accountable outside of the administrative benefit that you describe as well. And in this day and age of lack of consequences, at least we have attendance Taking to reinforce the importance of having a track record.

I’ve tried not taking attendance and more students end up failing when they don’t think they need to be there. I’m actually very understanding with folks who have legit reasons for struggling to attend (chronic illness, etc) but I teach small seminar classes. It requires people to be there to participate in discussions and other activities

as someone who went back to school in my 30s and have to pay for it myself, it is wild to see 30 students normally in a class but 120 during exam days. I would be upset if my child never went to class

I take attendance every class early on and then spot check throughout the semester if several are missing, but don't count it. It's mostly so when they come to me about poor grades, I can use that as part of the plan.

Not everything is about the individual student. My class works best as a community. If people don’t show up, it does not work, and the students that do show up end up frustrated.

Take attendance sure. It’s a great source of documentation for when students do well/not well. Part of the students’ grade, no.

1. As you said, at my school it’s required of faculty. 2. Attendance records can weigh heavily on my decision as a dean to approve/deny appeals. 3. Personally, it should the student’s choice. Consequences are consequences, though.

I really like when profs give credit for attendance. It keeps pressure off quizzes and exams and gives an extra incentive/reward for going to class. One of my classes was 50% attendance and participation and I was thrilled. You mean all I have to do is show up? Easy. Done.

We only have to have an assignment due before the drop day to meet federal guidelines. The only time I’ve had to take attendance was during Covid, but that was for contact tracing purposes. I have never taken attendance outside of that. Come, don’t come, I passed this class already. If you don’t want to pass, who am I to force the issue?

For me, my class is discussion based. Only about 50% of my class is testable. So, you not being in class means you aren’t learning half the material.

what about taking attendance with a grade or not? if it doesn't affect their grade they don't care but if I make it a grade they get points just for showing up.

I take attendance but build in about 2 weeks of absences with no penalty. I think it’s a good balance.

My biggest advice to freshmen is if you are struggling in a class show up to it !! It was most likely help your grade even if you aren’t the best in the class

Any classes from the business college at the public University I attended allowed two absences during the semester. Any more than two would result in a decrease of 10 points from your semester grade so you would drop an entire letter grade with each additional absence. It didn’t matter if you communicated. It didn’t matter what the absence was. They were very strict about it.
