Taylor Swift’s 1989 Came Out 12 Years Ago—and Its Cropped Polaroid Cover Started as “an Accident” Taylor Swift released 1989 on Oct. 27, 2014. It marked her big move from country music to pop. The cover is a Polaroid of Swift in a sweatshirt printed with flying seagulls. The top half of her face is cropped out. Swift explained the choice during a livestream with Yahoo and ABC News before the release. She said the album was named for the year she was born. The photos for the project were taken on Polaroids. “It was kind of an accident, so I figured why not make that photo the album cover?” she said. Photographers Sarah Barlow and Stephen Schofield, who work as Lowfield, shot the album. They had also photographed her Red album. Barlow said Swift wanted a small crew and a personal feel. The 1989 shoot lasted three days and produced about 460 Polaroids, along with digital photos. Barlow also said she and Schofield did not know yet that the album would win Album of the Year at the Grammys. The music was a risk too. In a 2015 GQ interview, Swift said even the title was a gamble. She said her label tried to step in. “The safest thing I could do was take the biggest risk,” she said. In October 2023, she released 1989 (Taylor’s Version), with five tracks from the vault. Lowfield shared unreleased photos from the original shoot.
