@browneyedgurl801: Corky is a 2-year-old Dalmatian, deaf since the day Wanda and Odell brought him home. It was 19 degrees on a bitter November night when the wind blew their yard gate open north of Oberlin, Kansas. Corky slipped straight into 160 acres of half-picked corn. Calling was useless; Corky has never heard a voice. Wanda, 72, called two neighbors. They called others. By 10:30 p.m., 63 people stood at the field’s edge with flashlights—some still wearing their choir practice clothes. Odell lined them up just six feet apart. Together, they swept through the rows, swinging their lights low, praying the dog would catch a glimpse of the beams. At 1:40 a.m., a feed salesman in the middle of the line caught a reflection. Corky was curled tight against a cornstalk, shivering, with frost clinging to his spots. Without stopping once, the salesman carried Corky 300 yards back to the house. A photo taken from the road at midnight captures the rescue: just 63 small lights cutting a straight, stubborn line across the pitch-black field.
