Why Attention Feels Like Love When You’re Lonely
Sometimes, when you’re lonely, the smallest amount of attention can feel like the biggest amount of love. A simple good morning, a random text, someone asking how your day went, or even someone remembering a little detail about you can make you feel like you finally matter to somebody. And the hardest part is that you might not even realize how much you’ve been craving those little things until someone finally gives them to you.
When you’re lonely, you start appreciating things that other people might overlook. You get excited when someone’s name pops up on your phone. You reread messages because, for a moment, they made you feel wanted. You start looking forward to conversations, waiting for replies, and sometimes even imagining that someone cares about you as much as you care about them. It’s not necessarily because you’re in love with that person. Sometimes you’re just in love with how they make you feel: noticed, appreciated, and important.
But that’s where things get complicated. Attention and love aren’t the same thing. Attention can be temporary. Someone can make you feel like you’re their entire world one day and barely acknowledge you the next. And when you’re lonely, that sudden change can hurt more than it probably should. You start questioning yourself, wondering what you did wrong, or why the same person who made you feel special can suddenly make you feel invisible.
Sometimes, we don’t actually miss the person. We miss having someone to talk to. We miss feeling like somebody is genuinely interested in our lives. We miss having someone who notices when we’re quiet, asks if we’re okay, and makes us feel like our existence means something to them.
The saddest part about loneliness is that it can make you settle for the bare minimum because, for a little while, the bare minimum feels like everything. You can mistake consistency for affection, compliments for commitment, and a little attention for genuine love. You convince yourself that maybe this person is different, not necessarily because they’ve shown you that they are, but because you desperately want someone to be.
