A youth flag football game in Wellington turned into a whole WWE tryout after some grown man allegedly forgot he was coaching children, not defending a championship belt. On October 20 at Greenview Shores Park, the UCF Knights won 6-0, but apparently that wasn’t enough for everybody to go home and eat dinner. During the postgame handshakes, 15 year old Sophia Lopez and an opposing player started arguing before things got physical. Deputies say the other girl grabbed Sophia by her hair and dragged her to the ground. That’s when 37 year old coach Brandon Mayer allegedly jumped in and put Sophia in a ch*kehold. This man reportedly saw two teenagers fighting over a recreational football game and decided the situation needed a guest appearance from the Undertaker. All this over SIX points in a league where the championship prize is probably a plastic trophy and a Capri Sun. Sophia’s father, Ryan Lopez, rushed in to help his daughter, who reportedly struggled to breathe during the chokehold. Deputies say Mayer’s 16 year old daughter then kicked Ryan in the face, turning this little family outing into a two generation criminal justice speedrun. Sophia was taken to the hospital, while Mayer and his daughter left the park, apparently forgetting that witnesses have cameras and license plates aren’t decorative accessories. Eight days later, deputies showed up at Mayer’s home and arrested him on a felony b*ttery by strang*lation charge, while his daughter caught a misdemeanor b*ttery charge. Mayer denies ch*king Sophia and claims he was breaking up the fight. His bond was set at $7,500, and the league reportedly kicked both him and his daughter out permanently. Imagine throwing away your coaching position, catching a felony charge, and dragging your daughter into the booking process because you couldn’t emotionally survive a children’s flag football game. Somebody needs to put this entire family on the injured reserve list until further notice.
