Lindsay Clancy called a suicide hotline twice, and according to testimony, both times she was redirected to her provider rather than being hospitalized or otherwise receiving an emergency intervention. She also went to Women & Infants Hospital seeking postpartum mental health treatment, but was told that another program would be more appropriate. And then, years later, it was the jury asking for help. During deliberations, the foreperson told the judge that one juror was refusing to apply the court’s instructions about reasonable doubt, leaving the other jurors unable to reach a unanimous decision. The defense asked for that juror to be removed, but the judge declined, and the jury was sent back to deliberate with all 12 members After seven days and more than 38 hours of deliberation, they still could not reach a unanimous verdict, and the case ended in a mistrial. There is something deeply painful about a case where, at two very different points in time, people were saying “we need help” … and the help they were asking for never came in the way they needed it to.
