Because they never had true hope that there was rescue given the scientists outcome … so they had to keep up the persona of giving into Shauna until it was sure that Natalie called for help

They wanted shauna to be seen as all powerful because they planned for her to be the queen at the end of S3, they weren’t gonna show the new queen getting imprisoned and jumped LOL that’s probably why they wanted to save it for season four

we need to remember that they’re teenagers, and their way of thinking may not have led them to even think of just putting Shauna and/or Lottie in the pit. Something else to consider is that the majority of the group still felt like Lottie had some kind of connection to the wilderness. Even if many of them were starting to turn on her, there’s still that bit of allegiance there. With Shauna, I think the other girls were afraid she was really going to snap and kill them. Also, when they had Mari running, it was clear that they wanted Lottie to chase her so LOTTIE would end up in the pit, but Lottie remembered the area they were in and knew the pit was there. Unfortunately, it was fate for the girls who survived to survive
