According to the complaint, Trump’s 2020 re-election campaign previously settled a lawsuit brought by Young and agreed not to use the song again without obtaining the proper license. Young now argues that the committee violated that commitment. The filing also emphasizes the political message behind the 1989 song, describing it as a tribute to the struggles of “the poor, homeless and forgotten.” It goes further, declaring that “the song is the opposite of everything that Donald J. Trump stands for.” Young’s objections to Trump using his music date back to 2015, when the businessman first announced his presidential campaign. The Canadian-born musician, who became an American citizen in 2020, has repeatedly opposed the use of his songs at Trump’s political events.
