@drjwhit: More than 170 Texas public schools have closed or are set to close since 2023, and every one of them happened on Greg Abbott's watch. Bransford Elementary in Colleyville is one of them. The school board voted 5-2 to close it, and those kids were split up and sent to two other campuses. The district pointed to losing about 1,500 students since 2019 and roughly $11 million in state funding along with them. Many of these schools were doing just fine. More than 20 of the campuses on that list had an A rating when their closures were approved. These are neighborhood schools where kids learned to read, where families knew the teachers by name, and where whole communities showed up for carnivals and spring programs. When a school like that closes, the neighborhood loses something it doesn't get back. School boards are making these calls because the state has squeezed them for years. Texas still funds schools based on daily attendance, the basic allotment barely moved from 2019 to 2025 while the cost of everything went up, and now the state is sending public money to private schools through vouchers. The people running this state have had more than a decade to fix school funding, and they chose not to. So when a school closes in your town, know where it started. At one time, teachers taught and truly possessed autonomy. Today, education is cookie cutter, dripping in racism and bought by billionaires. Anytime, a system is willing to crush and kill its own, all of humanity is in danger. The intensity, effort and alliances that created the current educational landscape has one goal. And, today’s generation has been primed to experience a level of illiteracy that can only be housed behind stone walls and barbed wire. People are sleep and overly occupied by menial tasks, parents are profoundly absent, society is mesmerized by social media, and even an intelligent mindset is detached from reality. That state of being will determine failures, successes, the ability to survive and ultimately freedom.
