@useinkling: if the question says heat, your answer probably isn't SN2. 👇 search "inkling orgo" on the App Store or go to tryinkling.app SN2 vs E2, how to actually tell, for orgo 1 midterm 2 substitution and elimination: step 1, look at the carbon. a methyl or 1° carbon with a good nucleophile and a weak base is SN2. a 3° carbon with a strong base can only do E2 (too crowded for SN2). a 2° alkyl halide is the fight, so step 2 is the reagent. a good nucleophile that is a weak base (I-, Br-, CN-, N3-, RS- in DMSO, DMF or acetone) gives SN2. a strong base like HO- or RO- on a 2° halide with heat gives mostly E2, a bulky base like t-BuO- gives E2 even on a 1° carbon, and heat favors E2. worked example: 2-bromobutane with NaOEt and heat is E2, and the major product is but-2-ene (Zaitsev, the more substituted alkene), while the same halide with NaCN in DMSO is SN2 and the carbon flips. slide 5 is the 3 traps 🧐 a strong nucleophile is not always SN2 because HO- and EtO- are strong bases too, E2 needs an H on the next carbon so no beta-H means no E2, and "heat" is the word that flips a 2° halide toward E2. slide 6 is today's quiz in the app (wetsuit) 👀 question 3 asks it on a real molecule. saved this? practice quizzes like it in the app which one do you mix up, SN2 or E2? 👇 #ochem #organicchemistry #sn2 #studytok #examprep
