“We know there was a dispute about rent. We know that they held different political views. But none of those things make any sense to why somebody would carry out such a horrific crime.” A robotics student who stabbed his housemate more than 30 times then left him to die in an alleyway behind their flat has changed his murder plea to guilty. Zack Coughlanc ambushed Jamie Collins near the garden of their home on 8 April and then left his body outside for eight hours before calling police. Coughlan had previously admitting killing Jamie, 21, but denied murder on the grounds of having lost self-control. However, seven days into his trial, the 23-year-old admitted murder. He will be sentenced on Wednesday. The men were both final-year robotics students at the University of the West of England and lived together in a house in Filton, owned by Coughlan. During the trial, Coughlan claimed he was fearful of Jamie, telling jurors that he was "barely able to think" when he lay in wait for his housemate to return from university before killing him. Coughlan then cycled away from the scene on his victim’s bike, disposed of bloodstained evidence and ate pizza and played video games. Some five hours later, he called 999. Jurors heard that Coughlan watched CCTV of him murdering his housemate five times. The pair fell out over rent and Jamie expressing his dislike of landlords. Coughlan suggested he was driven to kill his flatmate as his left-wing views became more targeted and personal. After Jamie left for university on 8 April, the prosecution say Coughlan packed a “killer kit”, including a black ski mask, gloves, black coat and a 15cm blade. Detective Chief Inspector Lucy Edgeworth said "all the evidence suggests" the killing was a "pre-planned, cold-blooded execution", however, the motive for the murder is “not clear”. “We know there was a dispute about rent. We know that they held different political views. But none of those things make any sense to why somebody would carry out such a horrific crime.” Jamie’s family said they were “sickened” that Coughlan pretended to help him, “when in fact he is responsible for killing him”. They remembered Jamie as a “sensitive and caring young man”. “His passion for equality stood out to everyone who knew him. His unapologetic inclusivity will be his legacy for all of us. “Jamie was incredibly bright and he had a promising future ahead of him. He had only two pieces of coursework to complete for his robotics degree before he was going to come home in a matter of weeks.”
