Warburg’s Nobel was for the enzyme that lets your cells breathe oxygen and turn it into energy. He was nominated 48 times, 13 of them in 1931. Then his work sat in the background for decades. In the 1920s, Warburg studied the energy of tumors. He proposed that cancer’s prime cause is a switch inside the cell, from breathing oxygen to fermenting sugar. That idea points to 6 findings. 1. Sugar A healthy cell makes its energy by burning oxygen. A cancer cell leaves that step out and ferments sugar. Today that pattern has a name, the Warburg Effect. Even with plenty of oxygen nearby, cancer cells go on fermenting sugar. A normal cell does that only when its oxygen runs low. Either way the sugar becomes lactate, waste the cell pushes out. The PET scan is built on that sugar habit. Before the scan, glucose in a radioactive form goes into the blood Cancer cells take in more of it than nearby tissue, which is why tumors light up on the screen. 2. Oxygen Cancer cells grow faster when oxygen is low. Exercise and deep breathing are two ways to keep the oxygen your cells need topped up. 3. Mitochondria When a cell is damaged, its mitochondria give the signal that it is time to destroy itself. If they break down, the cell turns to fermenting sugar just to survive. 4. NAD+ Your mitochondria need NAD + as fuel to turn your food into energy. NAD + feeds a chain inside them that produces ATP, and ATP is the energy all of your cells run on. Your NAD+ levels fall as you get older. That fall likely plays a part in aging itself, and in the chronic diseases that arrive with age. 5. Fasting A drop in your blood sugar takes away the fuel cancer cells like most. Your healthy cells just change over and burn fat in its place. 6. Autophagy When food is scarce, your cells start recycling their own broken parts. That clean-up may help hold early tumors back before they take hold. That recycling system won its own Nobel Prize in 2016. It went to Yoshinori Ohsumi, who showed how cells break their own parts down and use them again. It came 85 years after Warburg’s. Energy, repair and recycling all run as one connected system inside each of your cells. How you eat, move and breathe every day either feeds that system or starves it. One of the simplest ways to live longer and feel better with age is to feed your cells well each day.
